Horseshoe Bend Road reconstruction works start

Horseshoe Bend Road damage

Works to reconstruct Horseshoe Bend Road at the Thompson Creek Bridge at Mount Duneed started this week.

Surf Coast Shire Council has awarded a tender for the project and contractors will make every effort to ensure that works are advanced enough to enable the section of road to be open to traffic for the Christmas/peak summer period.

The road will then be closed again to allow the works to be completed. All works are expected to be finished by late April.

The section of road was severely damaged during major flooding late last year.

Cr Rose Hodge said she understood community frustration at the road having been closed for an extended period.

“We apologise for the time this project has taken and assure you that we are focused on getting these important repair works completed as soon as possible. We know the road closure has impacted many, so thank you for your continued patience,” Cr Hodge said.

“The repair works have been delayed for a number of reasons including an initial delay in getting the geotechnical assessment completed due to high demand following widespread flooding, as well as issues encountered during the planning and design process.”

The reconstruction works, including new guardrail, will factor in the potential impact of future extreme rain events.
