The legacy of a long-time instructor with the School of Postgraduate Studies (SPS) has been honoured with the donation of a syringe driver to Wellington Hospital in NSW.
Commanding Officer SPS, Wing Commander Amanda Norris, and Squadron Warrant Officer, Warrant Officer Tanya Fraser, presented the donation on behalf of SPS last month in memory of Flight Lieutenant Belinda McGowan. Prior to commissioning, Flight Lieutenant McGowan was an SPS facilitator on corporal, sergeant, flight sergeant and warrant officer courses.
Bruce McGowan said that, in 2020, his wife was diagnosed with lung cancer and died in 2021 while serving.
“Throughout her journey in palliative and end-of-life care, she encountered the limitations of medical equipment in smaller healthcare facilities,” Mr McGowan said.
“[She] had a vision for patients, their families and healthcare providers in rural, remote and regional areas to have access to high-quality medical equipment. To honour her vision, the Belinda McGowan Foundation was established.”
Funds raised by the foundation go towards the purchase of cuddle beds and syringe drivers to enhance end-of-life care. Mr McGowan said that each cuddle bed provided by the foundation embodied connection, compassion and dignity.
“The syringe driver, a small battery-powered pump, provides steady medication flow, allowing patients to receive continuous care at home, surrounded by loved ones,” Wing Commander Norris said.
She added that the donation by SPS was funded by the collection of empty cans and bottles, and it emphasised community support, leadership and the wellbeing of aviators and their families.
“Air Force’s commitment to force generation goes beyond operational readiness – it encompasses the holistic care of aviators and their contributions to society,” Warrant Officer Fraser said.
“Flight Lieutenant McGowan’s legacy is a testament to the values of compassion and service that are integral to Air Force. Her vision aligns with our mission to foster a supportive environment for our people.”
