The Tasmanian Liberal Government is continuing to deliver a record number of homes for those who need it by providing an unprecedented investment of $615 million into social housing, home affordability and homelessness initiatives.
The latest monthly Housing Dashboard shows that we are continuing to build new homes and provide assistance to those most in need with 2,654 households assisted in the past year through a variety of programs that have been made available, which is in addition to the almost 14,000 households already in social housing.
A further 19 new homes were completed in the month of September, with 279 completed in the past year. There are 243 more long term homes accessed under the Affordable Housing Strategy through to September 2021, including 33 in the last month.
There have also been a further 7 units of homeless accommodation secured to provide services to Tasmanians in need.
The Dashboard includes people who may already have a home or accommodation but would prefer to pay lower rent, look after a growing family or have more security of tenure.
But we know there is more to be done with continued growth in demand for social housing, and we are working to grow our capability to meet that demand with an unprecedented investment to build housing supply.
The results show that as of the end of September 2021, the Affordable Housing Strategy has delivered a total of 1,839 additional new homes, lots of land and new places in supported accommodation and homeless services including 855 since July 2019.
Our record funding commitment will mean an extra 2,000 new homes built by 2027, on top of the 1,500 already on track to be built by 2023, bringing the total to 3,500 new homes by 2027 to help our most vulnerable.
We are also responding by investing $2 million to develop a comprehensive Tasmanian Housing Strategy. This will investigate all the opportunities available to the State Government to influence the housing market through regulatory systems, strategic land use planning, policies, taxes, subsidies, and capital investment.
