Hub – new community heart for Mowbray

Nic Street, Minister for Sport and Recreation

Members of the public can get a bird’s eye view of what the new $43.6 million Northern Suburbs Community Recreation Hub in Launceston will look like with a new one-minute video providing a 360-degree representation of the facility planned for Mowbray.

The Hub on Invermay Road will become Tasmania’s largest multi‑purpose community sporting and recreation facility with more than 10,000 square metres of indoor space and additional outdoor space.

The Rockliff Liberal Government has committed $27.5 million to the project, as part of its significant long-term plan to invest in the State’s sport and recreation sector to get more Tasmanians active.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street said this project will improve access to community, sport and recreation in the northern suburbs of Launceston giving locals a new facility they can all enjoy and be proud of.

“We’re starting to see significant progress on the Hub with Tasmanian firm Anstie Constructions currently undertaking demolition work on the site,” Minister Street said.

“The Hub will serve as a northern base for Netball Tasmania’s high-performance programs and cater to local competitions run by the Northern Tasmania Netball Association to ensure all athletes have the very best facilities to train and prepare for national competitions.

“This is why the design also includes a designated gymnastics area, rock climbing, weightlifting and boxing facilities, outdoor activity areas, café and spectator seating, change rooms, administration facilities, and onsite parking.

“Beyond sport, the Hub will also include youth engagement, community education and counselling facilities as well as a multipurpose office space and the ability to host community gatherings of up to 800 people.

“This is more than just a sporting facility; the Hub will become a part of the social fabric of Launceston providing fun recreational and social opportunities for Tasmanians of all ages.

“The Rockliff Liberal Government is sticking to its long term plan and doing what matters for all Tasmanians by delivering infrastructure projects and developments that keeps our economy strong, creates jobs and makes Tasmania the best place to live, work and raise a family.”

Early works are expected to be underway in the coming months, with construction set to start in early 2024 and be finished by mid-2025.
