The Allan Labor Government has approved three major developments across Melbourne that will deliver hundreds of new homes for families.
Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister for Housing Harriet Shing announced more than 800 modern and safe homes will be delivered at Bluff Road in Hampton East, Banksia Gardens in Broadmeadows, and Barak Beacon in Port Melbourne.
All three projects were assessed and approved by the Minister for Planning under the Government’s streamlined planning processes.
More than 65 per cent of the homes will be social and affordable housing – all close to the public transport, schools, shops and services Victorians rely on.
The redevelopment at Hampton East will see a mix of new 1, 2, 3 and 4-bedroom homes – 285 in total – with 202 of them social and affordable housing. Social housing on the site will increase 16 per cent.
Barak Beacon in Port Melbourne will have 408 new homes, with more than 200 social and affordable – a 46 per cent increase in social housing on site. The four buildings will range from two to 11 storeys in height, in keeping with the character of Port Melbourne which has a range of medium density buildings.
Banksia Gardens in Broadmeadows will be expanded with 120 more social homes built on the existing site, all of which are social and affordable housing – a 10 per cent uplift on site. Once these new homes are delivered in 2026, all other pre-existing homes on the Banksia Gardens site will be renovated and modernised.
The projects are being delivered in partnership with the Albanese Labor Government.
Victoria is the fastest growing state in the country and the Labor Government is pulling every lever to enable 800,000 new homes to be built over the next decade as part of its landmark Housing Statement.
It’s all part of Victoria’s plan to deliver more homes in established suburbs – close to jobs, transport, education, and services – giving more young people the chance to live near where they grew up, and reducing future growth pressure on families in Melbourne’s booming outer suburbs.
As stated by Premier Jacinta Allan
“More places you can afford, more choices for you and your family – that’s what we’re delivering around Victoria.”
As stated by Minister for Housing Harriet Shing
“These projects across Melbourne will deliver hundreds of beautiful, modern, well-designed new homes for families to call their own.”
As stated by Member for Southern Metropolitan Region Ryan Batchelor
“The redeveloped Hampton East site will help tackle housing affordability by increasing rental housing stock in Melbourne.”
