The Australian Government is investing $70 million to help build a hydrogen hub in Bell Bay, Northern Tasmania.
Hydrogen hubs are regions where various producers, users and potential exporters of hydrogen across industrial, transport, export and energy markets area are co-located.
The Bell Bay Hydrogen Hub will support:
- the production of up to 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year – enough to fuel over 2,200 heavy vehicles for a year
- 740 jobs for energy specialists such as engineers and technicians, while hub construction will provide work for local skilled trades like concreters, plumbers, fitters and electricians
- the manufacture of green metals and alloys like iron, aluminium and steel.
Bell Bay has established port infrastructure and is home to a highly experienced and skilled work force.
As both an industrial centre and port, Bell Bay is well situated to be a significant location for hydrogen production, use, storage and export.
Tasmania has a natural advantage in the production of green hydrogen. This is due to its long history of renewable power generation.
The total combined investment in the Bell Bay Hydrogen Hub will be over $300 million.
The Australian Government’s contribution is $70 million. The remainder will be funded by the Tasmanian Government and its partners.
This investment reflects Tasmania’s role in Australia’s renewable energy transformation.
Funding for Hubs has already been announced for other projects in:
- Kwinana
- the Hunter
- Gladstone
- Port Bonython.
