IAG supporting customers on-the-ground in Far North Queensland

IAG, whose brands include NRMA Insurance, CGU and WFI, is supporting customers who have been impacted by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper and the subsequent major floods in Far North Queensland.

The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has declared a ‘Significant Event’ for regions of Far North Queensland impacted by severe weather and flooding over the past week.

Safety should continue to be the number one priority for North Queensland communities. It’s important that local residents continue to follow the advice of local authorities.

Residents are also being urged to avoid using the roads wherever possible due to landslips and large potholes.

We have a dedicated Major Event Response Team in place 24/7, who have ensured we’re well prepared to support our customers who have been impacted by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper and the flooding across the region.

NRMA Insurance Executive General Manager Claims Luke Gallagher said the safety of people across the region is the priority.

“The floods across the region are devastating for those communities and our priority is ensuring people are safe and supported throughout their recovery. Our Partner builders are on the ground in the areas we can currently access, predominantly in the Cairns region, to undertake emergency Make-Safe repairs to properties and to assess the damage,” Mr Gallagher said.

“Our teams are providing customers with immediate support such as temporary accommodation, emergency financial assistance and settling claims on the spot, wherever possible, mostly for food spoilage, and contents as well.

“Safety must remain the priority. Floodwaters are incredibly fast moving and dangerous, and conditions can change quickly. We urge everyone to continue to follow the directions of the emergency authorities.

“Once safe to do so, we urge any of our customers impacted by severe weather to contact us as soon as they can so we can provide immediate financial support and arrange temporary accommodation, if required.

“We have extra claims consultant ready to lodge your claims and to support you.

“If you can’t call us, the best way to lodge a claim is online via or the NRMA Insurance app.”

If you’ve been given the go-ahead to return to your property, you can clean up if it’s safe to do so, but we recommend that customers consider the following steps:

  • Before you start your cleanup, document the damage with photos and videos to support an insurance claim. 
  • Take photos before removing any water damaged or soaked items that may pose a health risk.
  • Make a list of damaged items, including the brand, model and serial number, if you can.
  • Don’t throw away items that could be repaired unless they pose a health risk.
  • Please speak with your insurer before you authorise any repair or building work and always prioritise your safety.
