The Rockliff Liberal Government will undertake further feasibility works of a new ice rink facility in Tasmania.
Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street, said the feasibility report confirms that Tasmanians have an appetite for ice sports.
“We recognise the impact that the closure of the State’s only ice sports and recreational skating facility has had on the local community,” Minister Street said.
“That’s why our Government commissioned work to determine the feasibility of a new facility being built in the State.
“This work determined market opportunities, demand from a recreational and competitive perspective, and an optimal configuration of such a facility.
“The Report shows that around 60 percent of Tasmanians would be interested in visiting a new ice rink facility, pending the location and price of entry.
“Now that we have confirmation about likely future demand and participation trends in ice sports, I have tasked the Department of State Growth with delivering the last piece of the puzzle – a facilities options paper.
“This next body of work will dive into locations, concept plans and cost estimates for a facility that best suits the Tasmanian market.
“It will also look at a funding strategy to guide any potential investment that the Government would need to make, to ensure any new facility is set up for a successful future.
“We know that Tasmanian skaters are eager to get back on the ice, and we will continue to work with the ice sports community to ensure any new facility meets their needs, and indeed those of all Tasmanians wanting to try the sports for the first time or to just have a skate around for fun.
“We will continue delivering for Tasmanians by ensuring that they have access to great sporting facilities here at home.”
The newly commissioned facilities options paper is expected to be completed by the end of January.
