Ararat Rural City Council is inviting the community to show their support for the LGBTIQ community at a flag-raising and recognition event this Friday for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex and Transphobia Day.
Also known by its acronym IDAHOBIT Day, the day was launched globally in 2004 to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersectional and questioning (LGBTIQ) people. This is the first time Ararat Rural City Council has participated on the day.
Ararat Rural City Council Mayor Cr Peter Beales encouraged the community to come along to the IDAHOBIT Day event to show their support for the local LGBTIQ community.
The event will start at 2pm with the raising of a rainbow flag at the Council office on the corner of Vincent and High Streets, Ararat. It will be followed by an afternoon tea and short video presentation in the foyer of Ararat Gallery TAMA across the road at 82 Vincent Street.
“IDAHOBIT Day is a time to stand with the LGBTIQ community and make the world a better place for everyone,” Cr Beales said.
Ararat Rural City CEO Dr Tim Harrison said Council wanted the LGBTIQ community to know that Council supported them.
“Everyone is equal and Council would love to see our residents come along to the event and show the local LGBTIQ community that they are supported here in their home town and region,” Dr Harrison said.
There will also be an IDAHOBIT Day event in Stawell in the morning of Friday 17 May when a rainbow flag-raising ceremony will also take place followed by a morning tea at the Northern Grampians Shire Council Chambers in Longfield Street, Stawell.
Both events are being supported by Northern Grampians Shire Council, Grampians Pyrenees Primary Care Partnership, Stawell Regional Health, Grampians Community Health and Ararat Rural City Council.
