Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has continued its work to manage and monitor the illegal waste dump site in Lemon Springs, south of Kaniva.
Ongoing monitoring of the groundwater by EPA and Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water Corporation (GWMWater) continue to show no signs of contamination.
Recently, to complement EPA’s groundwater monitoring, GWMWater has increased water sampling and testing of the bores, which supply the township of Kaniva, to every fortnight. While risk is low, this will ensure any potential changes to groundwater quality, will be detected early. GWMWater has a fact sheet on Kaniva’s groundwater supply.
EPA’s other work in the area includes:
• Hiring contractors to complete early stabilisation works (predominately key internal roads) to prepare the site for the next phase of remediation;
• Monitoring security of the premises;
• Further drone surveying; and
• Proceeding with planning and preparatory procurement works for site remediation
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) has informed EPA that fire restrictions finished at 1.00am on Monday 23 March for West Wimmera Shire Council (Northern Part). You may see some smoke in the area from private landholders, conducting burn-offs on their private property.
