Important changes to MITS parking restrictions

Moreland Councillors have voted to make changes to on-street parking restrictions being rolled out in some areas of Moreland as part of the Moreland Integrated Transport Strategy (MITS).

The changes respond to community concerns and will help residents, businesses and visitors continue to move around the city, while still working towards slowing the growth of cars in Moreland.

With less cars in Moreland, we can ease congestion, increase safety for all road users and reduce our carbon emissions. Alongside this Council is advocating for major improvements to public transport.

The changes include:

  • Parking restrictions changed to 2P 8am-8pm Monday-Friday, previously 8am-11pm. This will allow greater flexibility for visitors and residents accessing longer term parking in the evening and overnight.
  • A new parking permit for residents living in properties that have been subdivided since 2011 (and up until January 2021) to allow all-day parking only in the areas that are currently unrestricted. This provides a more affordable long-term parking option for residents living in properties subdivided after August 2011, such as newer townhouses and apartments.
  • New parking restrictions around the Brunswick and Coburg Activity Centres will generally only apply within a 200-metre walkable distance, a reduction in the area affected. This means some properties will no longer have the proposed parking restrictions directly outside of their properties.
  • Removal of the limit on the number of business parking permits for registered not for profit organisations, schools and child care centres to allow all-day parking in certain areas for their employees and volunteers, at a discounted cost of $65.55 per permit per year.
  • Glenroy Activity Centre parking changes delayed until at least the State Government’s level crossing removal works on the Upfield railway line are finished. Council will review the need for those parking restrictions following that.
  • Daily parking reduced to $2.50 (from $10 per day) around Merlynston train station when parking changes are made in the future and Glenroy train station if parking changes are made in the future.
  • December 2019 parking changes in Pascoe Vale are discontinued and are being removed.

The changes were resolved at a council meeting on 12 February 2020.
