Guy Barnett, Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing

The Tasmanian Liberal Government’s is continuing to deliver the health infrastructure upgrades needed to safeguard the future of healthcare in the North West.

The $41 million redevelopment of the Mersey Community Hospital Outpatients Clinics and Operating Theatres is continuing to progress.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Guy Barnett visited the site and said works are on track to be completed by early 2025.

“Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is about ensuring better health outcomes for Tasmanians become a reality,” Minister Barnett said.

“These upgrades will increase capacity for outpatients with 13 new consulting rooms and six specialist treatments rooms, six dedicated Paediatric rooms and waiting area, as well as new audiology services and physiotherapy gym.

“Significantly, these upgrades will also enhance the endoscopy capabilities of the Mersey, providing Tasmanians in the North and North West with greater access to this vital service.

“Construction is on track, with the ground floor Outpatient Clinics and level one Operating Theatres expected to be receiving Tasmanians by mid-August.

“Planning for the demolition of D Block is underway with the delivery and installation of a temporary Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) demountable building arriving in late June 2024.

“Importantly, the project is supporting over 100 jobs including 15 apprenticeships during construction – supporting jobs and the local economy in the North West.

“The upgrades are part of the broader redevelopment of the Mersey Community Hospital and will deliver an increased range of health services to meet the needs of the local community, in particular services to address chronic diseases.”

In coming weeks there will be some short-term changes to Main Entrance access and nearby parking areas to allow for the delivery of the demountable building.
