Impressive numbers take part in 2020 Canberra Memory Walk & Jog

An astonishing 800 people from Canberra and beyond turned out this morning in support of Dementia Australia’s Memory Walk & Jog fundraising event at Burley Lake Griffin.

Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe said it was a magnificent event and extended her thanks to everyone who participated, helped raised funds, spread the word, or gave a donation.

“We are delighted with the fantastic showing and the enormous levels of community spirit and support demonstrated throughout the event,” Ms McCabe said.

“As we know, many people impacted by dementia find these events a great way to connect with other local people in similar circumstances. And from what we witnessed, today was no different!

“It was inspiring to see more than 800 people out walking and running in support of people with dementia.”

Ms McCabe also acknowledged everyone who volunteered at the event.

“I would like to thank our MCs Andrew ‘Reidy’ Reid and Dan Bourchier for so generously offering their time to host the event, as well as our many volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the event ran safely and smoothly, and was enjoyable for all. The success of this event simply would not have been possible without your support,” she said.

The event saw attendees take part in either a 2km 5km or 10km run or walk raising $70,000. This money will help provide invaluable support, education and resources for people impacted by dementia in Canberra and across Australia.

Today, there is an estimated 3,300 people living with dementia in the federal electorate of Canberra. With that figure projected to increase to about 9,600 by 2058, events like Memory Walk & Jog play an important role not only in funding support, but also in raising awareness of dementia.

For those who missed out today, there is still time to show your support by making a donation at www.memorywalk.com.au. You could even consider checking out some of our other Memory Walk & Jog locations around the country to see whether there is one that might be a suitable option for you to register for.

Dementia Australia is the national peak body and charity for people, of all ages, living with all forms of dementia, their families and carers.
