Improved security screening completes airport check in upgrades

Michael Ferguson, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

The Rockliff Liberal Government is boosting the economy with a record job-creating infrastructure program.

As part of this plan, the final phase of Launceston Airport’s check-in hall upgrades is now complete with the opening of improved passenger security screening.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson, said the new security technology will reduce stress and improve passenger flow by allowing passengers to keep laptops, tablets and aerosols in their bags.

“The airport terminal is often the first and last thing travellers to Tasmania see, so it is important we ensure it is as smooth and comfortable experience as possible,” Mr Ferguson said.

“The Rockliff Liberal Government contributed more than $5 million to the three infrastructure projects as part of its long-term plan to grow the State’s visitor economy, supporting businesses and local jobs.

“Launceston Airport recently celebrated its busiest August on record with over 99,000 passengers passing through the airport and signifies the first time the airport has exceeded pre-pandemic levels.

“The airport is expecting a busier summer period with the recommencement of seasonal services by Virgin to Adelaide and Perth, and the recent arrival of Bonza in November.

“The increase in services will increase passenger numbers through the terminal, who will enjoy the comfort and ease of the world-class upgrades to the check in hall.

“The new security screening follows the opening of a new freight handling facility last month and a new passenger check-in hall in August.

“The upgrades are the largest infrastructure expansion since 2008 and form part of a ten-year infrastructure plan to modernise the northern Tasmanian airport.

“We will continue to build capacity and frequency to and from Tasmania, providing more travel choices for Tasmanian communities and visitors, and creating a competitive environment for flight prices.”
