The Andrews Labor Government will invest more than $270,000 in projects that will improve habitats, protect native wildlife and help preserve internationally-significant environment in the Gippsland Lakes.
Minister for Water Lisa Neville today announced the recipients of the Gippsland Lakes Community Grants, which are now in their fourth year.
The Grants provide community groups with funding for projects that help tackle key priorities for the Gippsland Lakes. This includes restoring habitat for native species, reducing sediment and nutrient loads, protecting native animals and improving understanding of plants and animals that call the Gippsland Lakes home.
This year’s projects include:
- Community stewardship protecting the Burrunan Dolphin and the Gippsland Lakes – Marine Mammal Foundation
- Tambo River Mouth north bank and south bank revegetation and access development and control – Lower Tambo Landcare Group
- Nungurner foreshore protection project – Nungurner Community and Coast Action Group
- Australian Pelican citizen science project and study into Australasian Bitterns as an indicator of wetland health – Birdlife Australia
- Continued improvement of the Heyfield Wetlands – Heyfield Wetlands Committee of Management
- Continued marine life and pest monitoring in the Gippsland Lakes – Friends of Beware Reef
- Sediment and nutrient reduction projects in the Gippsland Lakes catchment – Latrobe Catchment Landcare Network
- Understanding impacts of predators on migratory waterbirds – East Gippsland Landcare Network
The Gippsland Lakes Community Grants program is part of a $10 million investment by the Labor Government announced in Water for Victoria to improve the health of the Gippsland Lakes. The investment supports the Gippsland Lakes Coordinating Committee and delivery of on ground works and community engagement.
Water for Victoria is the Labor Government’s plan for management of our water resources now and into the future.
