The Australian Government is investing $15 million in CQUniversity’s Coastal Marine Ecosystems Research Centre (CMERC), to support science that is vital for the long-term resilience of the Great Barrier Reef.
The Centre is the only coastal and marine research facility based in Central Queensland. The facility has world-class research equipment and laboratories with access to cutting-edge analytical capabilities.
By 2028, this investment will ensure CMERC is:
- fully functional, with research infrastructure completed and fit-for-purpose
- staffed to support continued growth and increased research capability
- positioned to support the Australian Government to manage and protect the Reef through world-class research.
Collaboration with researchers and using the latest science is a key part of Australia’s actions to support a resilient Reef.
CMERC’s Research Director, Professor Emma Jackson welcomed the funding and said it has been a huge boost to the research team who are currently conducting research in areas such as:
- seagrass restoration
- nature based solutions
- microplastics in marine environments
- seaweed biofiltration
- harbour health
- the health of important recreational, commercial and culturally based fisheries.
“The funding will support not only critical research but also create a hub for the strong partnerships which CMERC has with Traditional Owners and Indigenous Sea Rangers, local industries, government, natural resource management groups and other research organisations,” Professor Jackson said.
This funding is part of the Australian Government’s $1.2 billion investment to protect and restore the Great Barrier Reef.
