A teen driver detected travelling almost 200km/h is among more than 1000 people ticketed for speeding on the third day of Operation Go Slow.
About 10.50pm yesterday (Friday 26 April 2019), Highway Patrol officers detected a vehicle travelling at 196km/h on the Hume Highway, Goulburn.
Police stopped the car and spoke to the 18-year-old ACT licence holder. He was issued an infringement for exceed speed over 45km/h and his NSW driving privileges were suspended for six months.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, said the combination of extreme speed and inexperience is a disaster waiting to happen.
“Speed limits are in place for a reason, and that reason is to save lives,” he said.
“More than 1000 people yesterday were caught flouting speed limits in NSW, and each and every one of them need to take responsibility for their irresponsible actions. Many of these drivers are young and inexperienced; the same drivers we regularly see overrepresented in road toll statistics.
“On top of this, 2503 people have so far been caught speeding for the duration of Operation Go Slow, which is a sobering number of people who seem comfortable endangering the lives of themselves and other road users,” Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.
Some other examples of irresponsible behaviour on NSW roads during Day Three of Operation Go Slow include:
Baulkham Hills: At 1.33am (Saturday 27 April 2019), a vehicle was detected travelling at 137km/h in a 100km/h zone on the M2 Motorway, Baulkham Hills. The 18-year-old male driver produced a P1 licence, which has a 90km/h limit and passenger restrictions. At the time there three passengers under the age of 21 in the vehicle. The man was issued infringements for P1 exceed 90km/h by more than 30km/h, drive with more than one passenger under the age of 21 and not stop at stop sign. His licence was suspended for three months.
Mount Colah: About 10.10pm (Friday 26 April 2019), a Toyota Rav4 was observed travelling south on the M1, Mount Colah, without its headlights on. It was detected travelling at 122km/h in the 110km/h zone, before entering an 80km/h roadworks zone. The vehicle then increased its speed to 145km/h and made numerous lane changes without using indicators. The vehicle was stopped and the driver, a 22-year-old man, was issued for infringements for exceed speed by over 45km/h, and other traffic offences. His licence was suspended.
Avalon Beach: About 10.45pm (Friday 26 April 2019), a 19-year-old man was driving west on Cabarita Road, Avalon Beach, when he hit two parked vehicles. Police attended and subjected the man to a breath test which returned a positive reading. He was taken to Mona Vale Police Station where he was returned a breath analysis of 0.164. He was issued a Field Court Attendance Notice for high-range PCA to appear at Manly Local Court on Wednesday 15 May 2019.
Operation Go Slow, the state’s ANZAC long-weekend road safety operation, started at 12.01am on Wednesday 24 April 2019 and will run until 11.59pm on Sunday 28 April 2019.
Police across NSW are continuing to target all speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt and motorcycle/helmet offences, which will attract double demerit points.
