Police are calling for witnesses to come forward after an incident in Longburn overnight saw one person hospitalised with a stab wound and a police officer treated for concussion.
At around 1am this morning Police were called to a reports of a large gathering of anti-social road users on Works Road in Longburn.
Police were also notified that somebody had been struck by a vehicle.
“This was a volatile situation and upon arrival, while one of our staff was arresting a person for disorderly behaviour, he was struck on the head from behind and knocked to the ground,” says Detective Sergeant David Wilson.
The officer was taken to hospital where he is being treated for concussion.
“The person who assaulted the officer has not been identified and we would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident,” says Detective Sergeant Wilson.
Another person at the gathering received a stab wound. The victim in this matter was transported to hospital and is in a serious condition.
Police arrested a 19-year-old man at the time and he has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He is due to appear in the Palmerston North District Court on Monday.
