Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne
Wednesday 30 August 2023
Inner West Council has today launched its grassroots campaign to support Yes at the soon-to-be announced referendum on the Voice to Parliament.
The Inner West will be proudly contributing in-kind support to the thousands of local citizens who are advocating for a successful outcome at the referendum.
Mayor Darcy Byrne has today written to every Mayor across Australia urging them to step up and help build local support for this crucial, nation-defining campaign.
The Inner West will be providing support to Yes activists through existing communications channels, the free use of Council facilities and ongoing public advocacy, as well as providing support to local Indigenous people through the duration of the campaign.
“We have undertaken extensive community education and awareness building in preparation for the referendum, because we recognise that this is a unique opportunity to achieve reconciliation,” said Mayor Byrne.
“Now we are stepping up our efforts to support the unprecedented number of our local citizens who are passionately supporting the Yes campaign. We’re determined that the Inner West will punch above its weight in this vital national effort.
“We know that thousands of people in the Inner West want to contribute to the Yes campaign, including helping to persuade voters outside of our community, and the Council will be assisting them to do that.
While this support does not include a financial commitment, we are proudly in support of the Yes campaign, and will provide every in-kind assistance that we can to local people of good-will who want to help take our nation forward through the referendum.
Forty-five mayors from across Australia have already joined Mayors for the Voice to Parliament and committed to help educate and inform their communities in the lead up to vote. Now it’s time for many more local government leaders to stand up and be counted.
