Innovation Lab back at Mount Gambier Library

The third Mount Gambier Library Innovation Lab will be held this Saturday 2 November 2019 from 10:00am to 1:00pm. The free, family friendly event will be delivered in collaboration with Anvil Electronics, TDRS, eNVIsion Limestone Coast and The Riddoch & Main Corner Complex and provides an opportunity for the community to explore, see, share, touch and play with different technologies.

The Library will be combining the real and virtual worlds by demonstrating augmented reality with local history content, mixing new technology and showcasing the historical Les Hill collection.

If you love being creative and have a fetish for technology this event is for you as the Library will be taken over by all sorts of cool equipment.

– Library Programming Officer Ricky Koopman

“There will be an opportunity to paint in 360 degrees with the Oculus Rift and once you see this in action you won’t be able to resist having a go.”

Suitable for all ages, the community will also have the opportunity to experience the world of virtual reality.

“Using our virtual reality headsets we will take attendees on a global adventure without a passport.”

“Participants can explore exotic locations such as the canals of Venice or see the icecaps in Antarctica, or if your stomach allows it you can take a ride on the virtual reality roller coaster which literally has you holding on as you are taken on a ride,” Mr Koopman said.

The team from TDRS will be onsite to explain how GigCity internet connectivity is soon to be available in the region. This information is ideal for local business owners and operators.

Anvil Electronics will have their very own pop up shop with an array of toys for all ages to enjoy, providing an opportunity to see what’s available for Christmas.

eNVIsion Limestone Coast will be running a ‘Lego Build a Duck’ competition where participants will be given 30 seconds to build their ducks with only eight pieces of Lego.

“We’ll give participants as much time as they need to strategize without touching the Lego before the clock starts,” eNVIsion Limestone Coast Regional Manager Callena Rawlings said.

“The exercise will build cognitive flexibility, encourage creativity and will stand as a reminder that innovation starts in the mind.”

The event will also feature the return of the popular ‘Mission Deconstruct’, an activity where children can take apart computers and other e-waste products, along with a hands on STEM craft session of DIY catapults and a chance to play with Sphero and Qooper Robots.

Attendees can go into the draw to win a STEM Kit valued at $200 which will provide an opportunity to extend the family’s learning at home.

A full program of the event can be found on the Library website – or you can pick up a printed copy at the Library, 6 Watson Terrace Mount Gambier.
