Investigation underway into illegal tobacco plantation, NSW

An investigation is underway following the seizure of more than two tonnes of tobacco in the state’s south.

Earlier this week, police received information that a large illegal tobacco crop was being maintained on a rural property in Berrigan, about 100km west of Albury.

Investigators from Murray River Police District attended the property about 3.45pm Monday (13 April 2020), and found 2.5-3 tonnes of tobacco leaf drying on the property.

A crime scene was established and held overnight by police.

A crime scene warrant was executed shortly after 10am yesterday (Tuesday 14 April 2020), with police seizing three motor vehicles, electronic devices and documentation from the property.

Arrangements have since been made to destroy the crop.

Murray River Police District Commander, Superintendent Paul Smith, expressed his thanks to the community for continuing to provide valuable information.

“We rely on members of our community to be our eyes and ears, particularly in rural areas,” Superintendent Smith said.

“As this investigation continues, we are appealing for anyone else in the community with information to come forward.”

Police are working alongside investigators from the Australian Taxation Office and the Australian Border Force-led Illicit Tobacco Taskforce.

As inquiries continue, anyone with information is urged to contact Murray River Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
