An investigation is underway after a shop employee was assaulted and items were stolen from a store in Wollongong earlier this week.
About 6.45pm (Tuesday 2 February 2025), two people entered a store on Keira Street, Wollongong, and requested five items from behind the counter, when the employee produced the five items as requested.
Police have been told the two people then ran from the shop taking the items without paying.
The employee – a 23-year-old man – chased the pair and stopped one of them – a woman – nearby; however, she did not have the items and left the scene.
The employee returned to the store when a third person entered the store and assaulted the employee repeatedly, before running from the scene.
The employee chased down the man; however, when he stopped him, he was again assaulted.
Witnesses contacted emergency services and officers from Wollongong Police District attended and commenced inquiries into the incident.
The employee was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Wollongong Hospital for treatment to abrasions and swelling to his face and a fractured left shoulder.
