Vocational education and training will be delivered in Territory prisons through a formalised partnership between the Territory Labor Government and Charles Darwin University (CDU).
A project contract signed today, worth $1.7 million per annum, enables the continuation and expansion of education and training courses for prisoners at correctional centres in Darwin and Alice Springs. The two-year contract allows for extension by mutual agreement.
Prisoners will be able to undertake a range of nationally accredited qualifications, as well as accredited courses, skillsets, and competence units in retail, hospitality, trade, industry, health, and arts sectors. Those who are released before completing their courses will be able to continue with CDU.
The project contract supports the NT Correctional Services’ Forward Together reform agenda, and aligns with its Prisoner Education and Training Strategy 2024-2026 which is nearing completion.
