Basketball fans can bring 2019 in with a spin at council’s Caloundra Indoor Stadium when the Suncoast Spinners Wheelchair Basketball Tournament takes place from January 11-13.
Wheelchair basketball was one of the foundation sports on the Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960 and today its popularity continues to soar helped by the success of the Invictus Games founded by Prince Harry.
One hundred and forty athletes, from beginners to elite, including medalists from the Invictus Games, members of Australian Rollers and the Australian Gliders, will compete across three full days of competition.
The three grades will feature 20 teams and there will be a chance to see five locals play in the Queensland Junior Development Squad.
The event will conclude with a presentation ceremony after the Premier Grade grand final on Sunday, January 13 at approximately 2.30pm.
Awards being presented include:
- First, second and third place medals for each grade
- All Star 5 Awards
- Most Valuable Player Awards
- Encouragement Awards
- Mandy Fooks Sportsmanship Award
- Face Plant Award
- Team Award.
Come along to watch the athletes battle it out in this sport which is not for the fainthearted. Spectator entry is free and there will be a BBQ hosted by the Lions Club. Coffee and kiosk facilities will also be available.
