- Queensland Day marking 165 years since separating from New South Wales.
- Community events across the state and Queensland Greats announced.
- Queenslanders urged to #MaroonIt on social media to win prizes.
This Queensland Day, Queenslanders can win tickets and vouchers to tourism experiences by sharing what they love about the state and including #MaroonIt with their photo or video on Facebook and Instagram.
Twelve community events, funded through the Queensland Government’s Queensland Day Sponsorship Program, will be held across Queensland between 1 – 9 June 2024 including Longreach, Cairns, Gatton and Proserpine.
Queensland Day on 6 June marks the state’s official separation from New South Wales as an independent colony in 1859.
Every year, Queenslanders celebrate the state’s culture, people, heritage, places, and industries with festivals, markets, art initiatives, parades, family fun days or an event unique to their community.
The traditional lighting of key icons, landmarks, and buildings will take place across the state on Queensland Day, so that Queensland will be lit maroon from the Gold Coast, all the way up to Townsville.
The Queensland Day message is clear – Together, let’s Maroon It!
As stated by the Premier:
“I am a Queenslander born and bred, and Queensland Day has always been an important celebration.
“Whether you are from the city or the bush, Thursday 6 June is an opportunity to reflect on how lucky we are to be part of such a wonderful, diverse state.
“This Queensland Day, I encourage all Queenslanders to come together, to celebrate our diversity and the values that we all share as a community – how we live, work and play.
“I look forward to announcing the 2024 Queensland Greats on Queensland Day. It’s an opportunity to recognise the efforts and achievements of remarkable individuals and institutions for their invaluable contribution to the history and development of our great state.”
As stated by Ali Brigginshaw, Captain of Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Day ambassador:
“It is an honour and a privilege to be a Queensland Day ambassador and to help celebrate what it means to be a Queenslander.
“I am proud to call Queensland home and I’m looking forward to celebrating Queensland Day with family and friends, sharing what we love about our great state.”
