Kiama Council today opened Jamberoo Pool ahead of its normal summer schedule, following requests from the local community.
Mayor Neil Reilly thanked staff from Kiama Leisure Centre for their work preparing the pool for the early opening.
“I think people would be surprised, like many Council operations, by the amount and complexity of the work involved in ‘simply filling a pool’,” Cr Reilly said.
“The Leisure Centre crew has done a great job at short notice getting Jamberoo Pool cleaned, filled and ready to go.”
Cr Stuart Larkins, who asked Council to consider the early opening, also thanked staff for their efforts.
“I know that the local community is very passionate about their pool, and I’m delighted to see it open early,” Cr Larkins said.
“I’d like to thank the young people, local families and the Jamberoo Ratepayers and Residents Association for their advocacy.”
Director of Planning, Environment and Communities Jessica Rippon said managing public swimming pools was just one of important services local councils provide to their communities.
“Hitting the local swimming pool is a fundamental part of summer for most Australians, and given the prediction of a hot summer, we’re pleased to be able to manage an early opening,” Ms Rippon said.
Entry to the pool will remain free throughout the season.
