James Cameron Exhibition At WA Maritime Museum Now Open

  • James Cameron Challenging the Deep exhibition opens today
  • The exhibition explores James Cameron’s extensive career in deep-sea exploration
  • James Cameron is promoting the exhibition with one in-person event in Perth tomorrow

The deeply immersive and dynamic exhibition James Cameron Challenging the Deep opens today at the WA Maritime Museum.

Developed by the Australian ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Maritime Museum, the exhibition takes visitors to the depths of our oceans through the lens of Cameron’s underwater cameras and his other technological innovations.

Entering the exhibition through a re-creation of a MIR submersible, the exhibition is reflective of James Cameron’s lifelong fascination with the deep ocean and the scientific and technological innovations that have supported his exploration work.

Cameron has merged his love of ocean exploration with his legendary filmmaking, and it would not be his namesake exhibition without allowing visitors to share in this crossover of his passions.

Visitors will see models, hand props and costumes from Cameron’s blockbuster film Titanic, including the dress worn by actress Kate Winslet’s character Rose, the iconic ‘Heart of the Ocean’ necklace and a copy of Jack’s sketches drawn by James Cameron himself.

The exhibition also includes the technical innovations Cameron developed to make the pioneering underwater feature film The Abyss in 1988.

Adding to the exhibition’s excitement and intrigue is the fact that James Cameron is coming to Western Australia to help promote it and share his love of ocean science and technology with the community through his one-and-only public event, James Cameron: In Conversation, tomorrow at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal.

The sold-out event will be live-streamed by the Western Australian Museum via

As stated by Acting Culture and the Arts Minister Hannah Beazley:

“James Cameron Challenging the Deep is an exciting exploration into science, technology and film and I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to see it while it is here.

As stated by Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk:

“This is a fantastic coup for the WA Maritime Museum, which is always putting on interesting and entertaining exhibitions for people to enjoy.

“I encourage everyone to come down to Fremantle and see this exhibition. Make a day of it and spend some time having lunch and exploring everything that Fremantle has to offer.”
