Nationally renowned photographer Jane Burton illuminates Billilla gardens on Halifax Street in Brighton with a lightbox art installation until the end of October.
The lightbox project at Billilla commissions three contemporary artists to engage with the Billilla site and each create three artworks for display on temporary lightboxes installed on the fence line of Billilla gardens from July to December 2023.
Mark Forbes was the first artist to display his works, choosing to engage with a professional ballerina to produce exquisite imagery inside Billilla mansion.
From September to the end of October, Jane Burton displays both at Billilla gardens on the lightboxes and at Bayside Gallery, heralding an exhibition from her photographic collections.
Jane Burton works largely with female subjects to create mysterious images with gothic overtones. Her works often allude to the histories of the sites she depicts, capturing elemental remnants associated with past activities and personalities.
Burton’s commissioned works draw on the previous matriarchs of Billilla, Mrs Jeanie Weatherly and her daughters Violet and Gladys, who variously lived at Billilla from 1888 to 1972.
The lightbox project brief
Photographers Mark Forbes, Jane Burton and Kent Morris were commissioned to foster a connection with the site, engaging with the building’s history, past inhabitants, and the community’s future vision for Billilla as a site of creative engagement.
Jane Burton exhibition dates
Jane Burton’s imagery will be on display from September to 31 October 2023 before the lightboxes change over to the next exhibition by photographer, Kent Morris.
The Jane Burton: Returning exhibition is now showing until 5 November at Bayside Gallery, Brighton Town Hall.
