Almost 6000 prospective students have made James Cook University their first preference in 2022, as the academic year gets ready to kick off next month.
Student demand to study at JCU has increased by more than 3 per cent compared to 2021, with more than 1900 offers made through QTAC so far – and more rounds still to come.
Of those places offered, Medicine was the most popular course in Townsville, while Dentistry and Nursing were the strongest for Cairns. There has also been strong demand for JCU’s Bachelor of Marine Science degree, as well as the University’s Diploma of Higher Education courses.
Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Chris Cocklin congratulated students who had received offers.
“We look forward to welcoming new students to JCU next month,” he said.
“And for those still waiting for offers, there are more options coming after this major round.
“This is an exciting time for everyone on campus. We have many excellent learning opportunities across a range of disciplines and I have no doubt that our students will take full advantage of them.”
Prof Cocklin encouraged applicants who had missed out in the latest round of offers not to give up hope, with more rounds available through QTAC this year.
“We have advisers available to answer any questions and I would encourage those who have applied to give them a call if you need help finding the best way to pursue your goal,” he said.
JCU Cairns Campus Director Dr David Craig said the University’s proximity to the Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage listed areas enabled it to continue to set the standard for world-class research in the tropics.
“JCU offers excellent hands-on learning opportunities and inspiring study locations in which our students thrive,” Dr Craig said.
“A quality tertiary education is vital in so many professions and JCU is proud to play a role in equipping our students for future success.”
Commencing Engineering student Erin Roy said she couldn’t wait to start her studies at JCU.
“A lot of teachers from my school told me about JCU and it sounded like a good option to stay close to home, have a great uni experience and meet new people,” she said.
“I haven’t fully decided what sort of career in engineering I’d like to pursue but I have been looking into biomedical, mechanical and chemical engineering.”
JCU will continue to accept applications and make further offers for most courses until the start of semester.
