JCU’s world-class result

James Cook University’s standing as a world-class research university has been reaffirmed, with new data confirming JCU is among the top 2% of the world’s universities.

The 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has been released today by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy and ranks JCU in the top 301-400 group of universities.

JCU has been ranked in the world’s top 400 universities since 2010.

ARWU compares more than 1800 universities across the world but only data for the top 1000 are published.

Vice Chancellor Professor Sandra Harding said the ranking is a tremendous achievement for the University and great testament to the work of JCU’s researchers.

“JCU delivers ground-breaking, internationally recognised research, and this ranking confirms that we perform very strongly when compared to the world’s largest, most successful universities.”

Professor Harding said it is extremely pleasing to see JCU once more recognised for the calibre of its research.

“This ranking reflects the very high standard of research undertaken by the University and bolsters our standing as a world-class research university,” Professor Harding said.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is considered one of the most prestigious and authoritative global university rankings.

ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university.
