The Jindabyne community turned out in big numbers for a hugely successful community clean-up day at the Claypits on Saturday 9 April, picking up hundreds of pieces of litter in time for Easter and marking the launch of Council’s new externally funded litter prevention campaign.
Volunteers were seen (and heard of) all around the lake foreshore, along with more than 20 volunteers at the Claypits meeting point alone.
480L of rubbish and 360L of recycling were collected, with a large quantity of fabrics, clothing and wire fencing also picked up during the clean-up – a huge amount considering the size of the area covered, over the course of only a couple of hours.
Some recycling items that were collected unfortunately ended up in the waste bin and became landfill. This was because the recycling was too contaminated to be sent to the material recovery facility to be reprocessed. Among the litter removed from the area during the clean-up were 68 cigarette butts, 582 soft plastics, 46 cans, 34 bottles, 22 takeaway containers, 12 face masks and plenty more random items.
The clean-up was a part of the statewide NSW EPA funded litter prevention campaign, which aims to tackle litter in hotspots and highly trafficked areas, as highlighted by the community.
During the Lake Jindabyne foreshore clean up, volunteers enjoyed free fruit (thanks to Woolworths for the donation), live music by the lovely Beautiful Imperfections and giveaways from Council. We would like to extend our thanks to our community for coming together to keep Jindabyne’s waterfront beautiful, safe and enjoyable for everybody.
This event was being hosted by Snowy Monaro Regional Council in partnership with Sustainable Snowies, NSW Environmental Protection Authority and the Canberra Region Joint Organisation.
If you missed out this time around – don’t sweat it – we have plenty more events and activities planned and can’t wait to welcome you to the volunteer clean-up crew.
