In recent months, the Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s litter prevention campaign has led the way for new infrastructure being installed and community education enhanced.
Coming up on Saturday 15 October 2022 is a community cleanup in Jindabyne. The event will take place from 10am from Jindabyne Skate Park and will target the surrounding areas. Following the cleanup, fresh fruit will be provided along with stalls and entertainment. Community members and visitors are all welcome to participate.
The event is part of a wider campaign run through Council’s Resource and Waste Education team. The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) funded project aims to tackle litter in hotspot areas highlighted in the Sustainable Snowies Litter Prevention Strategy.
The public areas with large amounts of litter were suggested by community members and include the Claypits carpark, Claypits foreshore park, Banjo Paterson Park and Pooh Bay all in Jindabyne.
The campaign included a previous cleanup event in April, which successfully removed a large amount of rubbish from the Claypits and foreshore area.
New bins have been installed in the target areas to eliminate overflowing litter through their smart technology. The bins use solar-powered compactors which crush the rubbish and recyclables, increasing the litter capacity by 6-8 times over a standard bin. This new infrastructure will save costs through reduced contractor visits and will reduce litter.
