  • Project is part of largest TAFE capital works program in WA history, creating more than 1,000 jobs
  • New facilities will deliver training in traditional trades and stimulate local economy
  • Construction expected to start in November 2021
  • A Great Southern architectural firm will design the new state-of-the-art workshops at South Regional TAFE’s Albany campus.

H+H Architects, which is headquartered in Albany with offices in Kalgoorlie and Bunbury, will design the $17 million project announced in July as part of the largest TAFE capital works program in WA history.

The new workshops will replace the campus’ existing 50-year old trade facilities and will deliver training for jobs in metals and engineering, automotive, building and construction, and carpentry and joinery trades.

The McGowan Government’s investment in specialist trades training in the Great Southern will ensure local young people and jobseekers have access to world-class training opportunities to meet the workforce needs of local industry.

Albany’s new workshops were announced in July as part of the WA Recovery Plan. A record $167.4 million will be invested to fund upgrades to essential infrastructure across Western Australia’s TAFE colleges.

H+H Architects has worked on several educational projects including the UWA Science Building in Albany, Great Southern Grammar and Albany Residential College.

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

“This is an exciting new chapter for trades training in the Great Southern and will encourage young people in the region to gain skills in job growth areas that will result in long-term jobs.

“It is part of the McGowan Government’s WA Recovery Plan, which will generate a pipeline of jobs for Western Australians and lay the ground work for a bright future.”

As stated by Albany MLA Peter Watson:

“This is terrific news for Albany and the wider Great Southern region and I am thrilled to see a local architect in H+H get the opportunity to design what will be state-of-the-art facilities.

“Having qualified tradespeople is critical to the future prosperity of our region and this project will ensure we have a pipeline of workers to meet industry demand.”
