Just another day at office for pampered pooches this Friday

Workplace welcome mat goes out for four-legged family members.

They may work in varied fields, but employees of some Adelaide legal, accountancy, public relations, hospitality and community services organisations have one thing in common. They love dogs.

These groups are among 40 registered so far with RSPCA South Australia to participate in the annual Take Your Dog to Work Day, happening this Friday June 21.

Established by Pet Sitters International (PSI) in 1999, Take Your Dog to Work Day celebrates the joys of canine companionship and encourages non-dog owning employees to consider finding a place in their hearts and homes for dogs in need. The event started in the United States but its popularity has grown, and now companies in five other countries (Israel, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia) participate.

Community Centres SA, in Glandore, is among the organisations signed up with RSPCA South Australia to participate in this year’s event as a fundraiser for animals in need. Office Manager Scott Dutschke describes his organisation’s CEO Kylie Fergusen as “a firm believer in the health benefits of having dogs in the workplace”.

“This will be our first year participating in this event and we’re expecting about five dogs to be joining their owners at work,” Mr. Dutschke said, adding that his own dog, Indy (a 10 year old beagle) will be among them.

Apart from raising funds towards the care of animals in need, RSPCA South Australia spokesperson Carolyn Jones said she hopes the special day raises awareness about the value dogs bring to our lives, and of their need for human company.

“We’d love it if more dogs went to work with their owners, where possible, rather than being left alone at home all day.”

Dogs make up about 30% of the 9000 animals RSPCA South Australia cares for every year. So far this financial year the organisation has rehomed 319 dogs and puppies.

Anyone keen to hold a TYDTWDay is encouraged to broach the idea with their employer or head of human resources. If holding it this Friday is not possible, then they could suggest an alternate day close to that date.
