The Industrial Court of NSW has formally been opened during a ceremonial sitting held at the Chief Secretary’s Building in Sydney.
Justice Ingmar Taylor was also welcomed during the ceremony as a judge of the Industrial Court and President of the Industrial Relations Commission (IRC).
Separate ceremonies will be held on July 11 to welcome Justice David Chin as a judge of the court and the IRC’s vice-president, and on July 18 to welcome Justice Jane Paingakulam as a judge of the Court and the IRC’s deputy president.
In a speech during the sitting, Attorney General Michael Daley said Justice Taylor was well-equipped for his new role, and his appointment had been universally applauded.
The NSW Government re-established the Industrial Court, which was initially decommissioned in 2016, to allow it to play a critical role in the state’s industrial relations framework.
The Court will hear all industrial relations matters relating to NSW State Government and Local Government employees. Private sector employees will remain under the Fair Work Commission.
Attorney General Michael Daley said:
“The appointment of Justice Taylor will ensure the Industrial Relations Commission and the restored Industrial Court remain strong, independent, fair and reasonable.
“Justice Taylor is the personification of what a judge should be.
“He will help to create the safest and fairest of workplaces for the people of New South Wales.
“I offer my warmest congratulations to Justice Taylor as he begins his well-deserved appointment.”
