Shoalhaven City Council is aware that there has been a sighting of a juvenile White shark in Lake Conjola.
The shark, which appears to be around two meters in size, was first sighted in the lake by a member of the public on Sunday.
Council has informed the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) – Fisheries.
The community is being asked to exercise caution around the lake and not attempt to catch the shark or intervene in assisting it to return to the ocean.
Fisheries Officers will be actively patrolling the area to ensure fishers are following the rules and leave the shark alone.
White sharks in this location are unusual due to their preference for nearshore waters and beaches.
There are heavy penalties under the Fisheries Management Act 1994 for harming this threatened species or their habitat. This legislation is enforced by the NSW DPIRD-Fisheries.
Any suspected illegal activity, including the targeting of the shark can be reported to the DPIRD via the Fishers Watch Phone Line 1800 043 536.
White sharks are an internationally protected species that are listed as vulnerable in New South Wales.
