Two kayakers have been rescued after they were reported missing on the South Esk River overnight.
Police were called by a concerned family member about 9pm after the father and his teenage son did not arrive at their destination.
The pair had been kayaking from Longford to Hadspen and had not been seen since 3.15pm.
Police conducted an air and ground search along with SES volunteers – activating Polair and utilising drone capability. Two surf lifesaving vessels were also deployed onto the river.
About 1.20am the missing kayakers were located by the drone pilot on a small island in the river near Mill Dam.
Polair confirmed their location, however due to heavy tree coverage were unable to land in the area.
Surf lifesaving vessels were re-deployed, and the father and son were safely rescued about 4.30am.
Both were uninjured.
Inspector Michael Johnston said while it was a great result, the pair were inexperienced kayakers and had underestimated the conditions of the river.
“Both were wearing life jackets, however neither had taken a mobile phone, and were unable to contact emergency services when they encountered difficulties,” he said.
“It was the pair’s first time attempting the route, and they had been tipped from their kayaks multiple times before they no longer felt safe continuing their trip.
“The river was fast flowing with heavy tree coverage which proved challenging for rescue efforts, and while this was the best result we could have hoped for, it could have easily ended in tragedy.
“If you are going onto the water in any vessel we urge you to be prepared, and always plan ahead. Check the weather forecast, and ensure you have the correct safety equipment onboard.”
