As highlighted earlier this year, The Barossa Council have been undertaking a regreening initiative across the region to ensure the future sustainability and aesthetic of our tree lined streets.
“This project ensures we take a holistic approach to our street trees and the role they play in providing amenity, shade and habitat, so our streets are places that are inviting and pleasant” says Mayor Bim Lange.
The three year plan to audit, maintain, remove and replace trees is now well underway with such works complete on Memorial Avenue, Nuriootpa, Old Kapunda Road, Nuriootpa, Greenock Road, Nuriootpa and Barossa Valley Way from Nuriootpa to Tanunda.
Removal and replacement works to identified trees on Bilyara Road, Tanunda, Elizabeth Street, Tanunda, Basedow Road, Tanunda and Penrice Road, Penrice will commence within the next six weeks. These locations boast large numbers of Carob trees, and Council are pleased that these trees will be replaced with like-for-like, particularly given that the Carob species have, in the past, been difficult to source.
Through the audit process, the trees which have been flagged for removal, and subsequent replacement, are those which specialist contractor Treevolution identified as having no long term future due to reaching the end of their lifespan, and therefore posing an unacceptable level of risk.
“The community can be assured that Council’s priority is to retain the look and feel of the region through maintaining tree numbers” said Mayor Lange.
The regreening project will continue with Murray Street, Tanunda being addressed toward the end of this year, and further works in other locations into 2020, and possibly beyond.
Audited trees are identifiable by an aluminium tag which contains a unique tree ID number, and where appropriate, residents will receive notification where tree removals are being considered.
