Kerbside Changes Set To Begin

From March, Mitchell Shire’s new kerbside collection service will officially begin. These exciting changes include the introduction of food and garden organics and glass recycling bins to Council’s kerbside services.

The collection frequency of the general rubbish bin will also change to a fortnightly collection.

To help residents adjust to these changes, Council has developed the My Mitchell app. This app provides a personalised bin collection calendar and bin night reminder notifications.

Residents can also access collection schedules and waste disposal information on the app or Council’s website by entering their property address.

Quote from Mayor John Dougall

“Council understands households will need time to adjust to the new kerbside collection service. If you’re unsure about anything, please don’t hesitate to contact Council – we’re here to help,” he said.

“We know our community has been asking for a food and garden organics service, and we’re pleased that it will begin shortly. These changes will help to significantly reduce waste sent to landfill, and help to contribute to a circular economy by converting food and garden waste into valuable compost that can be reused in parks and gardens.”

Helpful tips for managing food waste

To keep your kitchen caddy clean:

  • line it with old newspaper, junk mail, paper towel or approved lime green kitchen caddy liners with AS4736 or AS5810
  • empty it every 2-3 days into your food and garden organics bin
  • rinse the caddy or clean it in the dishwasher

To manage smells from your food and garden organics bin:

  • store the bin in a shady spot.
  • layer food waste between lawn clippings or garden pruning’s
  • sprinkle bicarbonate of soda in the bin to help absorb odours
