On Monday 27 March Ballina Shire Council will begin upgrading Kerr Street, between Swift and Russell Streets, Ballina.
The works will include:
- Southbound and northbound lane duplication.
- Installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Kerr Street and Bentinck Street.
- Installation of protected right-hand turns into Bentinck Street.
- Upgrade of stormwater services.
These works are expected to continue to August 2023 (weather permitting).
During this time the following traffic conditions will be in place:
- Two-way traffic will be maintained
- Access to Kerr Street from Bentinck Street will be closed during asphalt works. Residents will need to detour via adjacent local roads. This is expected to occur in May and June for one week.
- Access to Kerr Street properties will be maintained with traffic control in place during construction hours.
- Speed limit reduced to 40kmph through construction zones.
Footpath works
During construction pedestrian access will be maintained, however at times there may be temporary pedestrian detours around construction zones.
Dust
Dust may be present during construction. Council’s contractor will use water carts to help minimise dust.
Noise
There will be noise present during construction. Construction works will occur during the day to limit disruption to residents and visitors staying with accommodation providers.
Car parking
Street parking will be unavailable during construction. Motorists will need to use alternative parking either side of the construction zone.
This project follows recently completed works to duplicate Kerr Street between River and Burnet Streets.
“Once the southbound and northbound lanes are duplicated between Swift and Russell Streets, there will be dual lanes all the way along Kerr Street from Tamarind Drive to River Street,” explained Council’s Manager – Project Management Office, Brett Dyki.
“Most importantly, this will improve traffic flow to meet current and future traffic volumes, decrease travel times, and improve pedestrian accessibility and motorist safety.”
To avoid congestion and travel delays:
- Allow extra travel time.
- Avoid non-essential travel during peak morning and afternoon periods.
