Kids keeping active as part of Walk to School month

Dozens of schoolkids and families from across Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale put their best foot forward yesterday morning as part of the annual Walk to School month.

Students from all three primary schools walked, rode or scooted to and from school on Monday 14 October in an effort to develop healthy habits from a young age.

The Borough of Queenscliffe assisted in the organisation and promotion of this VicHealth event, and Queenscliffe Mayor Cr Bob Merriman was in attendance at Princess Park to walk alongside Queenscliff Primary School students and share in the fun.

“Our towns are perfectly suited for people to appreciate our natural surrounds while partaking in valuable exercise on their way to school or work,” Cr Merriman said. “It’s extremely pleasing to see so many young people getting involved with this great initiative.”

Council provided a healthy breakfast on the morning to promote the importance of nutrition and positive lifestyle choices.

Participants are also encouraged to make walking to school a year-round habit, and each school will go in the running to win prizes including holding a footy clinic hosted by an AFL or AFLW player.

Walk to School month runs from 7 October to 1 November 2019.
