Kingston Sea Shanties is a major participatory arts project that will unite members of the community in song.
Kingston Sea Shanties will rehearse weekly from June with local choir leader Katrina Waters and leader of the legendary Men in Suits choir, Andrew Price.The project will culminate in a major public performance at Kingston City Hall on 7 September.
Members of the Kingston Sea Shanties will be performing music from the renowned singer-songwriter Fred Smith, who will add to his collection of “urban sea shanties” with new songs written especially for the project.
Fred Smith is known for his uncanny story-telling and a wry sense of humour, with a musical range that stretches from folk to funk. Described as “one of the most prolific and insightful songwriters of his generation” (the-riotact.com), Fred turns his eye to Kingston, from bayside ‘burbs to industrial streetscapes, from leafy cul-de-sacs to the pulsing artery of the Nepean Highway, writing songs to sing together in celebration of the places we call ‘home’.
