Over the last few months, we have published information on the responsibilities of dentists with respect to labelling of ‘Pharmacist Only Medicines (S3) when they are provided to patients in the practice. One product that falls within this schedule is high strength fluoride toothpaste.
Dr Geraldine Moses, who provides the ADA’s valued service outlined in her most recent article specific details about the legal requirements across all states and territory legislations when it comes to what you need to put on the label. As you will see from the table below, there is a lot of variation with the most significant requirements required in Queensland.

Whilst these requirements can differ between states and territories, the ADA has created labels for NEUTRAFLUOR 5000 PLUS TOOTHPASTE and CLINPRO 5000 ANTI-CAVITY TOOTHPASTE that you can download and edit to add the name of the patient and your clinical details. An example is shown of the label text to be included that will be appropriate to use in all Australian states.
The label templates can be downloaded at
These labels will be able to be printed directly onto generic labels that measure 3.81 cm high x 9.9 cm wide. These can be purchased at most office supply stores.
