Peter Malinauskas and the Labor Party have doubled down on letting convicted sex offenders, such as Vivian Deboo, being able to vote at the next State Election.
Attorney-General, Vickie Chapman, said twice in the last two days the Labor Party, in cahoots with the Greens and SA Best voted to protect the right to vote for individuals sentenced to more than three years in jail.
“It’s absolutely abhorrent that Peter Malinauskas and Kyam Maher want violent offenders convicted of rape, manslaughter, persistent sexual abuse and serious drug offences to have the right to vote,” Ms Chapman said.
“We strongly believe paedophiles, rapists, drug traffickers and the like should not be afforded the right to vote.
“It’s absolutely ridiculous that these criminals are barred from voting at next year’s Federal Election but will be able to vote in our State Election in 2022.
“The Marshall Government will now force a deadlock conference on Prisoner Voting legislation as we firmly believe serious criminals should not be afforded the right to vote,” Ms Chapman said.
Under laws proposed by the Liberal Party at the last election, criminals serving a sentence of three years or more will not be able to vote at the next State election. This is in line with the laws that apply at Commonwealth level.
