Senator Mehreen Faruqi, Deputy Greens Leader and spokesperson for International Aid and Global Justice, is calling on the Labor government to listen to the UN secretary general and Pacific nations and take the necessary steps to address the climate crisis.
We know that Pacific nations are the worst impacts of the climate crisis, and that Australia is not paying its fair share to help.
As stated by Senator Mehreen Faruqi:
“If Albanese’s serious about building trust with Pacific nations, he needs to listen to them. Stop approving new coal and gas mines. Stop subsidising fossil fuels. Stop making the climate crisis worse.
“Pacific nations are paying the price of the climate crisis, despite contributing little to it. Australia, on the other hand, is a major contributor to the climate crisis and is not even paying its fair share to help Pacific nations cope with it.
“It’s just arrogant of the prime minister to roll into Tonga, treat Pacific nations as geopolitical pawns while fueling the climate crisis.”
