Labor fails to keep train and tram services up with population growth

Liberal Party Victoria

After almost a decade in government, new analysis reveals there are fewer kilometres of Melbourne train and tram services per person than when Labor came to office.

The analysis by former Department of Transport planner Peter Parker shows there were five kilometres of train services per person in 2014 compared with 4.8 kilometres in 2023. For the tram network, it has slipped from 5.3 kilometres of services to 4.7 kilometres.

Under Labor, public transport services have not kept pace with population growth, with Melbourne’s outer suburbs and growth areas most acutely impacted.

Shadow Minister for Public Transport, Matthew Guy, said: “Under Labor, it’s clear public transport services are not keeping pace with our rapidly growing state.

“This issue will only become more acute as the Allan Labor Government puts every cent into the Suburban Rail Loop at the expense of public transport services across the state.”

“Labor cannot manage money and Victorians are paying the price through fewer public transport services, record debt and record taxes.”
