Labor must reverse their opposition to the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s Tasmania Bill and stop standing in the way of more homes being built quicker to help our most vulnerable.
³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s Tasmania will deliver our promise to deliver 10,000 homes between now and 2032, ensuring Tasmanians have safe and secure shelter sooner, during this ongoing rollout.
In fact, ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s Tasmania will do exactly what Labor are calling for – result in more houses being built at a faster rate, which will help more Tasmanians access safe and secure housing sooner.
This model takes what works so well in community housing providers in leveraging the skills of a Board and asset base to deliver houses, and will deliver the most cohesive and integrated housing and homelessness system in the country.
Importantly, it will also complement the significant investments we are making right now on immediate actions to help those in housing stress, investing $36 million each year on wrap around homelessness support, including Specialist ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾lessness Services, and Safe Spaces across the State.
It’s easy to complain while offering no alternatives- which Labor have done for eight years – but this is a real solution that Labor are blindly opposing for no reason other than to play politics, which sadly helps no one but themselves.
Even worse, their opposition comes just days after the Labor Member for Bass claimed “this is not the right time for significant investment in new infrastructure in Tasmania.”
It seems Labor are not only against building more homes sooner, but are also opposed to the kind of job-creating infrastructure investments to pay for them.
They are clearly at odds with each other and it’s no wonder Tasmanians don’t know what they stand for,
The establishment of ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s Tasmania has the broad support of our housing and homelessness sector, and I call on Labor to stop standing in the way and support the Bill when it is voted on in the Legislative Council.
