Labor’s Attack On Tasmania’s Tourism Industry Condemned

Tasmanian Government

Tasmania’s tourism industry is one of the State’s biggest employers, and the Tasmanian Government will continue to back the industry, and its critical destination marketing investment.

Dean Winter’s attack this morning on one of our most important industries is an attack on the 43,000 jobs that rely so heavily on the industry.

For Labor to describe critical marketing campaigns that drive visitation to Tasmania as “puff and promotion” is a blatant display of his disregard for homegrown jobs.

Labor has not changed, and still doesn’t understand how the Tasmanian economy works.

Unlike Labor, the Tasmanian Liberal Government will always back tourism workers to the hilt.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff and Minister for Tourism said Tasmania’s economy relies on key sectors like the tourism and hospitality industry to fund schools, roads, and hospitals.

“Visitors inject around $3.5 billion into the Tasmanian economy every year and for every dollar visitors spend in Tasmania, another 83 cents is generated in our economy,” Premier Rockliff said.

“As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are investing in destination marketing to ensure the State remains competitive in national and global markets.

“Our aspiration is to achieve 1.6 million interstate visitors and 400,000 international visitors by 2030, growing visitation sustainably.

“This will represent an additional 750,000 visitors to Tasmania by 2030, with an estimated growth in visitor spend to $5.6 billion.

“The Come Down For Air campaign is part of the Tasmanian Government’s plan to highlight what our State has to offer.

“The Tasmanian brand must cut through, and Tourism Tasmania’s role is essential in driving visitor demand and activity to regional destinations.”

Premier Rockliff said Dean Winter’s plan to slash the Government’s investment in this vital sector should send a shiver down the spine of the 43,000 jobs it employs.

“Under Labor, these jobs – and the families they support would be at risk,” the Premier said.

“Labor are anti-jobs and anti-economic growth.

“Our Government will continue to back in businesses and jobs across our regions by supporting tourism operators to grow and diversify.”
