Labor’s budget cuts threatening community safety

Liberal Party Victoria

Victorians’ safety continues to be jeopardised under the Allan Government following whistleblower reports that cuts to corrections staff are leaving offenders in the community without appropriate supervision.

Broad job cuts across the Department of Justice has seen declines in the ongoing monitoring of criminals serving community sentences, as the number of individuals managed per officer has nearly doubled to 50.

Furthermore, new arrangements set to be introduced across the workforce will mean that registered sex offenders may no longer need to attend appointments, nor be supervised as they move throughout the community.

Shadow Minister for Corrections, Brad Battin, said: “The insufficient resourcing of these officers has sadly resulted in a particularly violent offender committing murder.

“At a time when crime and serious offending is increasing at record rates, instead of taking action to keep the community safe the Allan Government is cutting frontline services to pay for their cost blowouts and financial mismanagement.

“As a result community safety is continuing to be jeopardised as Victorians wear the consequences of Labor’s incompetence.”
