Labor’s division over the stadium, and therefore Tasmania’s AFL and AFLW teams, has once again reared its head with Member for Bass Janie Finlay doubling down on her desire to kill the stadium, doing another Becflip after voting to progress the stadium last month.
Yesterday, Ms Finlay told the Examiner that she doesn’t support the stadium, despite having voted the stadium through as a Project of State Significance.
Minister for Stadia and Events, Nic Street said that Labor continue to be wishy-washy and can’t seem to stick to a position.
“Ms Fliplay has produced a gold-medal mental gymnastics performance, but we’re now seeing that her precarious routine on the balance bar will inevitably end in a fall to the mats below as her colleagues back away from their opposition,” Minister Street said.
“How can you vote to progress the stadium while on the other hand being in complete protest to it?
“It seems she is feeding her addiction to the spotlight by making controversial statements on something so close to the hearts of Tasmanians.
“While Labor fight amongst themselves on what they stand for, the Tasmanian Liberal Government are getting on with the job of delivering game-changing infrastructure that grows our economy and creates more jobs.”

- 29 September 2023 – Ms Finlay posts a 30 second long clip begging Tasmanians to sign Labor’s petition to kill the stadium dream;
- 20 October 2023 – Stadium Project of State Significance Order passes House of Assembly with Ms Finlay’s eager vote;
- 28 November 2023 – Media release blowing more negative smoke about the potential of the Stadium; and
- 29 November 2023 – Janie Finlay speaks with the Examiner to double down on “Labor did not vote for Macquarie Point Stadium.”
“Labor are desperate to spin themselves out of this mess of their own making,” Minister Street said.
“Not only has Ms Fliplay become Ms Spinlay, but if her track record of loudly promoting an anti-stadium rally only to not turn up to it on the day is anything to go by, what can we expect next from her?
“Labor stand for absolutely nothing.”
